Sonya Voumard

Biography

Dr Sonya Voumard is a journalist, author and academic whose work has been widely published in major Australian newspapers, magazines and literary journals. Her first novel Political Animals, published in 2008, was inspired by her time as a political correspondent for the Age in Canberra. She has lectured for many years in creative nonfiction and journalism at UTS. Her 2016 nonfiction work The Media and the Massacre explored the ethics and storytelling surrounding the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. It was longlisted for a 2017 Stella Award and for a 2018 Kibble Award. Sonya’s latest book, Skin in the Game: the pleasure and pain of telling true stories, was published in March, 2018. Her nonfiction essays have also appeared in Griffith Review and Meanjin. Born and raised in Melbourne and Airey’s Inlet in Victoria, Sonya now lives in Sydney.
